The treatment in Ayurveda is classified into two depends on its amount of Dosha.
1. Sodhana Chikitsa (Cleansing treatments)
2. Shamana Chikitsa (Pacifying treatments)
The large amount of toxic bi products is eliminated in by process. The elimination is done through the over stimulating the body excretory system mainly gastro intestinal system both upwards and downwards. The deposited toxins called Ama in Ayurveda in various areas like gastro intestinal tract (Koshta) seven tissues (Dhathus), vital organs (Tri Marma) and Mind are taken back into the gastro intestinal tract and eliminated by various mathods called Pancha Sodhana / Pancha Karma.
v Vamana (Therapeutical Vomiting) Internal oral preparations are given to facilitate this process. Drug addictions; Respiratory problems like Hay fever Asthma; fera complex and depressions can be under control with this treatment. The diseases on the upper part of the body or the house of Kapha area are cleaned with this.
v Virechana (Therapeutical Purgation). Internal medicines which cleanses the middle part of the body, Pitta house; Gall and Liver, stomach and small intestins are cleaned with this method.The diseases of the Pitta organs and tissues like Lver, Gall bladder, Heart, Eyes, Blood; Skin diseases, inflammatory diseases are under control with this.
v Vasthy (Theraputical administration through Colon) Herbal extracts, Oils and combination of both etc are administered through rectal canal. This helps in the neurological and bone and joint diseases. The cleansing of the lower part of the body and rejuvenating the body is done by this method. Balancing of the Vata which is a main part of neurology can be achieved by this.
v Nayam (Nasal Medications) Herbal extracts, oils and powders are administered through the nasal aperture. Nose is the main entrance to the brain. So any administration of medicinal extracts will influence not only the diseases of the nose but also the diseases of the cranial nerves. Facial paralysis, Migraine, Parkinson’s, Trigeminal neuralgia, Alzheimer’s, Multiple sclerosis like neurological diseases acn be under control by this method. It is also a cleansing treatment in various sinus problems.
v Rakta Moksha (Blood letting therapy) In this treatment the impure blood is drained out by various ways; with leeches, venesection, Needle pricking etc. The impure blood causes various skin and inflammatory diseases of the bone and joints like eczema and rheumatoid arthritis.
These five procedures are called Pancha Sodhana / Pancha Karma. The excess doshas along with Ama are expelled out with this method and thereby balancing the doshas.
This is specifically done after the shodhana therapy or less vitiation of doshas are less amount of Ama. Herbal preparations like Kashayas, Arishtas, Churnas, ghees and oils are given to correctthe derangement of Doshas, Dhathus ,Malas and Agni and increases the immunity. The restoration of normality is brought about without any elimination.
Purva Karma (Preparatory Procedure)
Prior to Pancha Sodhana / Pancha Karma, the body should be prepared for the elimination. The deposited toxins should be made loose from the Dhathus and should be brought back into the gastro intestinal tracts. For this two main procedures are done:
1. Snehana Karma (Oleation both external and Internal)
In this procedure , herbal medicines in the form of oils and ghee are used both externally and internally. The various procedures implemented for snehana are Sneha panam, Abhyangam, Kaya sekam, Pizhichil, Pichu, Sneha Vasthi etc.
These procedures are various oil applications but not be called as Ayurveda Massage.
2. Swedana Karma ( Sweating treatments)
Swedana means sweating, there are various procedures which produce sweating and thereby the toxins which are oleated brought back into the gastro-intestinal tract. The various procedures are Navara kizhi or Shashtika panda sweda, Churna sweda, Patara potala sweda or Ela Kizhi, Dhanya sweda, Drava sweda as pizhichil or Kaya seka , Steam bath, dry sweating like Grahsna or Udvartana etc.
